Eating Out at the Taw River Inn

News Item! Members and wives met up at the Taw River Inn, Sticklepath on January 22nd  2016 for  a meal and evening of conviviality – regret no photos. Food and conversation was excellent. The Taw River Inn is a very social pub, offering value pub grub, first rate ales and sensible prices!

Little Stik is the first club mass build, it is a well known model for which Rob has modified the build, both to strengthen and to reduce weight!DSCN7632

The workshop lasted the entire afternoon, including assembly of the cruciform strengthened fuselage, folding and gluing of the 3mm depron wing (pre covered with parcel tape – there are lots of YouTube videos showing depron wing construction techniques, click here for just a sample). Members plan to hold flying competitions with the Little Stiks when the weather finally abates!

The weather was kind – overcast for much of the afternoon with 6 – 8 MPH SW. Lots of fun with the occasional unplanned landing!

George King Fete fun fly

Yesterday we prepared a strip (thanks Andrew and Nigel) and provided 4 hours of fun flying for visitors to the fete, in between rain showers that had us scattering for cover.

Thank you Nigel, Gary, Richard M and Ricardo H, for bringing along your models and flying. We weren’t over-run with spectators but met new potential members and gave folk a glimpse of our hobby.  Among those who came along and intoduced themselves was a professional “drone” pilot. He and his partner have an aerial photography business right here in Okehampton. Hopefully we can expand our relationship with them.

So whilst not as spectacular as the previous weekend it may have been more beneficial for our club in the long term.

Lakeside Residential Home Charity fun fly

Saturday the 25th July saw the club hold its third fun fly at this event.

This was with out doubt the best yet with lovely scale models, scale gliders, aerobats and for the first time model jets. The flying and quality of all the models was superb and wowed those attending.

Special thanks to the Blackdown Radio Control Club, Eddystone Model Flying Club, East Devon Model Flying club and most importantly Felix Marten for arranging the event. None of this would have been possible without you all. Thank you!

I will let the beautiful pictures taken by club member, Michael Robinson, tell the story.

Slope Soaring Countisbury Common

Andrew, Michael and Rob visited Countisbury Common today for some slope soaring. Once again super conditions with a Westerly of about 10 – 12 mph and partly cloudy. Again what a superb site for soaring.

Albatros over Bridge Field

A video me and Graham shot with a Mobius camera onboard his Parkzone Albatross. The camera was a bit heavy to be mounted so far back, but the results are fun.

Countisbury Common, North Devon

Debbie fancied a day out and I wanted to explore a new slope site so we headed up to Countisbury Common in North Devon. This is roughly 90 minutes from Okehampton.

To say that this site is spectacular is an understatement. I have flown St Agnes, Cornwall, Bwlch and Great Orme in Wales but this place is on another level. There was a Westerly at roughly 10 mph and conditions were gorgeous.

Here are some of the views;

DSC02285a

This is the view from the car park. The walk up to the Building and mast in the centre of the picture is very gentle and the flying area is either side of the building.

This the view from the top looking SW towards Lynton.

DSC02278a

Me about to launch the PMP Stage 2 Mk1 kindly given to me by Dennis recently which quickly became a favourite. Super open landing area at the back.

Sadly, shortly after this I put it into a roll and the wing broke in the centre and the model was lost on the cliffs below. This is the highest cliff face in England at 300+ meters and there was no way that I could even see it, never mind retrieve it.

DSC02289a

This the side view of the slope  from the approach road and you can make out the building and mast on the top of the hill.

Here is the view from Lynton. I have marked the flying site at the top.

Very sad to loose this model because it was really lovely but I will be back there soon. Lynton is lovely little town.
